Neelam Shami Rao has been appointed as the new Secretary of the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, under the leadership of Giriraj Singh.
Before taking charge of the Ministry of Textiles, she served as the Secretary of the National Commission for Minorities in the Ministry of Minority Affairs. Smt. Rao has also held prominent positions in esteemed organizations such as the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO), where she served as the Central Provident Fund Commissioner. Additionally, she was the Director General of Training in the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, with the rank of Additional Secretary. Earlier in her career, she served as District Collector in the Guna and Koria districts of Madhya Pradesh.
With extensive experience as an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, Smt. Rao has held various administrative roles across central and state governments. She has been a driving force behind numerous reforms in EPFO, transforming it into a more efficient, transparent, and service-oriented organization. An IAS officer of the 1992 batch from the Madhya Pradesh cadre, she is an alumna of Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology, Allahabad, where she earned a B.Tech. degree in Electronics.
