Celebrating the global print industry: Record number of deals signed at drupa 2024

Drupa 2024 exceeded all expectations. It received top marks from visitors from all over the world, who left the trade fair with new ideas and clear prospects for the future. Numerous contracts were signed and technological innovations inspired the print and packaging industry.

drupa 2024 in Düsseldorf, the world’s No. 1 trade fair for printing technologies, drew to a successful close on 7 June after eleven days. It impressively demonstrated the progress of an entire sector and gave proof of the operational excellence of the industry. 1,643 exhibitors from 52 nations presented an outstanding showcase of innovations in the Düsseldorf exhibition halls and thrilled the trade visitors with unforgettable performances. The international share of the visitors was 80%, with attendees coming from 174 countries – a record figure. After Europe, Asia was the region with the most strongly represented at 22%, followed by America at 12%. Asia as well as Latin America and the MENA region are markets with great growth potential, which was reflected in the significant increase in exhibitors’ presence and order books. Many key players, such as Bobst, Canon, Fujifilm, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen, HP, Horizon, Koenig & Bauer, Komori Konica Minolta, Kurz, and Landa, reported having signed contracts that significantly exceeded expectations. In some cases, the sales targets set were already achieved in the first few days of the trade fair.

Erhard Wienkamp, Managing Director at Messe Düsseldorf, is highly satisfied with the course of the trade fair: “Drupa has underpinned its position as the industry’s leading trade fair and its unique appeal in a remarkable way. The impressive international flair and, above all, the high decision-making competence of the visitors ensured in-depth and well-founded technical discussions at the trade fair stands on the one hand and many direct investment decisions on the other. Our exhibitors told us about large-volume purchase agreements.”

Dr. Andreas Pleßke, Chairman of the Drupa Committee, emphasized the exceptional position and relevance of Drupa: “Drupa stands for new approaches and new technologies like no other trade fair. It is not only the largest but also the most important global platform for our industry because the entire printing and post-press industry meets at the world-leading trade fair. It has been invaluable for generating leads. Nowhere else offers the opportunity to make so many new international contacts from all over the world in such a short space of time in one place.”

Industry decision-makers are highly satisfied

Exhibitors praised the high level of decision-making competence of visitors. They, in turn, gave top marks to the range of products and services on offer in the 18 exhibition halls. Around 96% of all visitors confirmed that they had fully achieved the objectives associated with their visit. At over 50%, most of them came from the printing industry, followed by the packaging industry, whose share has increased significantly and which was the focus of many exhibitors as a growth driver. Many well-known brand owners were welcomed at the trade fair stands. In total, 170,000 trade visitors attended Drupa 2024.

Digitalization as a determining factor

In the last financial year, the global printing industry achieved a turnover of around EUR 840 billion (source: Smithers) and continues to develop at varying pace worldwide.

“At Drupa 2024, we experienced firsthand just how relevant and resilient this industry is,” summarises Sabine Geldermann, Director Drupa, Portfolio Print Technologies. “The community is determined to set the course for the future together. Exchanging ideas with people from all continents and from all areas of the industry was extremely enriching and inspiring. We were able to welcome around 50 large delegations from various nations, and numerous globally active associations and organizations chose Drupa as the ideal setting for their conferences and board meetings.

Together we are stronger. Many new strategic alliances concluded at the trade fair reflected the opportunities that are only possible in such a concentrated form at drupa: meeting market players from other countries around the world in person, using core competencies as synergy effects, forming networks, and driving the market forward together

Sustainable technologies in focus

Technology is the key to achieving sustainability goals – exhibitors at Drupa illustrated this with numerous practice-orientated developments and concrete solutions. Top priority is given to resource efficiency and the path to a functioning circular economy. In addition, Touchpoint Sustainability from the VDMA, the German Machinery and Equipment Manufacturers’ Association, showcased current state-of-the-art innovations, presented best-practice use cases and gave a far-reaching outlook into the future of a sustainable printing industry.

Valuable knowledge transfer

The extensive supporting program with its five high-caliber special forums Drupa Cube, Drupa Next Age (DNA), and Touchpoints Packaging, Textile, and Sustainability was very well received. In times of constant change and the resulting new business models, they ensured an intensive transfer of knowledge and provided important guidance. Together with its partners, drupa focused on impressive industry expertise and the future topics of its target groups. Guided tours on various key topics rounded off the trade fair experience.

The Future of Fashion: sustainability, traceability and style with RadiciGroup advanced textile solutions

RadiciGroup participated in the fifth edition of Phygital Sustainability Expo, a leading event in the fashion industry entirely dedicated to the ecological transition of fashion and design brands through technological innovation, which was held in Rome on 4 and 5 June.

For the third year in a row RadiciGroup was present, along with other representatives of the institutional world, businesses and consumers, in order to witness the Group’s ongoing commitment to a fashion that channels not only individual expression, but conveys also a positive change for the planet.

During the narrated fashion show, held in the evening of Tuesday, June 4 in the evocative archaeological site of the Imperial Forum Museum, RadiciGroup presented in fact a stylish, versatile and durable outfit, able to adapt to constantly changing situations. It is a jumpsuit made of Radilon Chill-fit, an innovative nylon yarn – made by RadiciGroup in its production sites with low environmental impact – that gives the fabric excellent technical performance: it is able, in fact, to guarantee a perfect thermal regulation and ensure freshness and comfort throughout the day.

Given its extreme comfort, the jumpsuit worn during the day can quickly turn into the “basis” of an elegant evening outfit by simply adding a kimono-dress, made in nylon, to ensure complete future recyclability.

The outfit is the result of the collaboration between RadiciGroup and the talented designer Anita Bertini, a young designer at POLI.Design (an international reference for postgraduate training at Politecnico di Milano): the goal is to propose a wardrobe made of essential, durable and recyclable garments, which offer endless possibilities of matching without ever compromising personal style and commitment to a better world.

Two companies from the Italian textile scenario collaborated on this project as technical partners: Calzificio Argopi for the creation of the jumpsuit and Erco Pizzi for the kimono dress fabric.

ReCircle enables businesses to go circular with textile waste management vertical: ‘Project Extra Life’

Our clothes are destroying the planet. Annually, the global textile industry is responsible for approximately 92 million tons of waste. In India, textiles significantly contribute to industrial water pollution, demanding innovative solutions. That is why ReCircle, the leading clean-tech resource recovery innovator, has launched Project Extra Life to tackle India’s textile waste problem and build a more circular future.

With Project Extra Life, ReCircle has established a circular textile waste management vertical as an addition to its existing waste management services and aims to collect, sort and sell at least 570 MT textile waste over the next 12 months. ReCircle aims to reach over 1 lakh + institutions and individuals including fashion houses, textile businesses, hospitality giants, educational institutions, brands, offices, factories, households as well as existing clients within its corporate programme to help close the loop on textiles.

What is ReCircle looking for?

Since launching Project Extra Life in April 2024, ReCircle has collaborated with businesses to recover textile waste and organized Mumbai-based textile waste collection drives for consumer participation.

Whether it is a large manufacturer or a small business, the company offers tailored solutions to handle textile waste efficiently. Here’s how businesses can participate:

  1. ReCircle offers nationwide participation options and custom plans for bulk contributions in cases where businesses have more than 10 tons of textile waste. The waste can be delivered directly to ReCircle’s Advanced Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in Mumbai to:

    • ReCircle MRF Dahisar | Material Recovery Facility | BMC R-North Ward Dry Waste Centre, Gaonthan, Anand Park, Dahisar West, Mumbai, Maharashtra 400068.

  2. ReCircle also proposes enabling institutions in setting up textile waste collection drives.

  3. Fashion houses/textile businesses can reach out to ReCircle to manage their production waste and set up ‘take-back’ programs for customers. Considering the highest value will be captured from post-consumer (wearables) textiles, Project Extra Life will concentrate on this part of the value chain over the next coming months.

“Consumers and brands need confidence through traceability and accountability, tracking the lifecycle of donated clothes, and ensuring they are responsibly recycled and not diverted to landfills. Project Extra Life is an attempt to do just that by building value potential of textile waste, creating a transparent technology-driven value chain, all while focusing on capacity building for waste workers and enabling a more circular textile waste value chain”, said Rahul Nainani, Co-Founder & CEO, ReCircle.

Where does the collected textile material go?

ReCircle aims to collect materials such as cotton, wool, polyester, acrylic, synthetic fibres, nylon, denim, silk, etc. After the textile waste is collected, they are sent to ReCircle’s Advanced Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in Dahisar, Mumbai where they are assessed on reusability by ReCircle’s Safai Saathis (waste workers). The collected textile waste, which is beyond repair, is sent to ReCircle’s recycling partners in Surat and Panipat where it is bailed, shredded, and turned into recycled yarn. Based on this, the garments start their Extra Life journey via one of four channels; including:

  • Rewear: what can be worn again

  • Revamp: what needs a few repairs

  • Recycle: what is nearing end of life

  • Relife: unusables converted into energy

“With our optimized textile reverse logistics, we offer a solution to the existing long-drawn and expensive process by leveraging data which adds an advantage and provides better supply chain visibility to businesses, leading to benefits such as cost and waste reduction as well as improved brand sentiment. We are positive that we can empower various stakeholders to participate in the formalization and mainstreaming of the textile waste value chain and eventually create a closed-loop textile industry”, said Gurashish Singh Sahni, Co-Founder & COO, ReCircle.

Project Extra Life intends to build the value potential of textile waste, create a traceable and transparent value chain, leverage technological interventions for waste segregation and sorting, improve inefficiencies of waste handlers through capacity building, and foster an enabling environment to pave the way for a more sustainable and efficient textile waste value chain. ReCircle aims to integrate micro-entrepreneurship and create 80-100 indirect jobs for waste workers with the launch of the new textile waste recovery vertical thereby impacting lives and livelihoods.

Efi highlights its DNA in single-pass production inkjet printing for packaging, display graphics, and textiles at drupa 2024

0

Electronics For Imaging, Inc. today reported that at Drupa 2024, running through 7 June at Messe Düsseldorf, it is highlighting its expertise in proven single-pass printing solutions for printing excellence in the packaging, display graphics, and textile markets. Visitors to EFI’s stand will see some of the company’s latest single-pass innovations live, including the breakthrough Packsize EFI X5 Nozomi, the world’s first full-color, on-demand, right-sized box system that prints, cuts, creases, glues, and erects customized boxes at the rate of up to one box every 6 seconds, and the EFI Nozomi 14000 SD single pass printer for sign and display. The company is also showcasing a vast array of applications produced on the brand-new Nozomi 14000 AQ true water-based, single-pass printer for corrugated packaging and displays and the Nozomi 12000 MP single-pass technology for direct-to-metal package printing, as well as the next generation EFI Reggiani BOLT XS single-pass textile printer. EFI is located in Hall 9, Stand A20-1 at the show.

“Since 2012, when we acquired Cretaprint for single-pass inkjet printing of ceramics, and drupa 2016, where we first unveiled Nozomi, we have not only been focused on leveraging single-pass technology across multiple markets, but also continuing to improve the speed, quality, efficiency, and more for this disruptive printing technology,” said Evandro Matteucci, Vice President/General Manager of EFI’s Inkjet Packaging and Building Materials. “The entire global EFI team continues to participate in these developments, pulling technologies and expertise together in a way no other company can. The initial proof case of this capability was bringing the original Nozomi to market in less than two years, an incredible achievement that has resulted in the installation of more than 60 units around the world.”

EFI Nozomi printers represent the industry’s best single-pass inkjet corrugated technology in terms of power consumption efficiency, certified by the Fogra Research Institute for Media Technologies against the ISO 20690 energy standard. Plus, EFI Nozomi printers are the only single-pass inkjet offering in the industry to have its output certified for OCC recyclability and reliability by the Western Michigan University Recycling, Paper, and Coating Pilot Plant – a leading certification organization for corrugated recycling.

“We see single-pass printing as the future of production printing in the markets we serve,” Matteucci added. “With an increased focus on sustainability around the globe, this technology stands to be able to accelerate the migration of an increasing volume from less sustainable analog printing technologies while at the same time opening up new business opportunities for the print providers that adopt this technology. With quality no longer being an issue, and the speed at which these single-pass printers can operate, print providers also have the opportunity to distinguish themselves in the marketplace with both the speed to market they can deliver for their customers and the ability to eliminate minimum order quantities, which reduces waste and inventory risk.”

In addition to showcasing single-pass inkjet printing at the show, EFI is also introducing two new software solutions that add to the value of single-pass technology, including:

• EFInsight, cloud-based intelligence that optimizes the operational efficiency and TCO of EFI packaging, display graphics, or textile digital inkjet printing systems with powerful cloud-based data collection, analytics, reporting, proactive maintenance, and process control tools. It delivers the insights needed to understand the economics of production and the tools to maximize inkjet printer investments. It is currently available for EFI Nozomi single-pass printers for packaging.

• EFI’s Life Cycle Assessment tool for Nozomi printers, which documents Nozomi’s environmental footprint, developed in partnership with Clean Agency. This tool, which EFI customers and their customers can use, analyses their CO2 emissions as part of their overall packaging Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), and has proven that printing corrugated materials on the EFI Nozomi digital press reduces Global Warming Potential (GWP) by over 50% when compared to analog printing technologies.

Visitors to the EFI stand will be able to see a wide range of print samples to fully appreciate the quality and versatility of EFI single-pass printers.

“Across the entire spectrum of our inkjet printers, EFI offers the widest array of solutions, using Genuine EFI inks, and many of them are powered by Fiery® technology,” said Matteucci. “Experts are available during drupa to explain the differences between multi- and single-pass technologies, where each fits, and the benefits of single pass, especially in high-volume environments. We believe single pass is the future of high-volume production inkjet printing across the markets we serve today and new markets in the future.”

Be sure to visit EFI at Drupa 2024, Hall 9, Stand A20-1. For information about EFI products and services, visit www.EFI.com.
