Packsize and EFI launch X5 Nozomi, the industry’s first full-color, erected box solution

Packsize, the market leader in sustainable, right-sized, on-demand packaging, and EFI™, a global technology company leading the worldwide transformation from analog to digital imaging, today announced their collaboration on the world’s first on-demand box system that integrates full-color printing on boxes using a single automated solution.

The X5 Nozomi system combines Packsize’s X5 fully-automated, Right-sized Packaging on Demand system, part of the Packsize X Series, with EFI’s industry-leading Nozomi single-pass digital inkjet printer line for corrugated.

“The partnership with EFI and the innovation of the X5 Nozomi is a testament to our team’s commitment to reimagining what is possible and empowering brands to truly customize their customers’ unboxing experience,” said David Lockwood, CEO of Packsize. “No other machine can go from blank corrugated to printed, right-sized, on-demand erected boxes in one solution – and in as little as six seconds per box.”

Taking the manufacturing process from seven complex steps down to one, the X5 Nozomi is automating and simplifying box production. The opportunities enabled by this solution include:

  • Moving from plain monochrome boxes to full-color impactful digital printed
    images
  • Reducing labor and enabling automation through ready-to-pack erected boxes
  • Integrate shipping labels, hazmat labels, and other custom labels within the print
    design
  • Cost-effective, sustainable production

“The corrugated box is becoming a more engaging experience. At the same time, unboxing videos are having a rising impact on brands even as digital ad influence declines due to oversaturation and ad-blocking,” noted Frank Pennisi CEO, EFI. “All this has resulted in boxes as billboards, enabling positive brand experiences for consumers. Essentially, packaging sells a product, which is why EFI partnered with Packsize – to empower brands in elevating their packaging quickly, simply, and cost-effectively with the X5 Nozomi.”

The X5 Nozomi addresses increasing consumer and government demand for sustainable packaging. The solution reduces packaging waste caused by oversized boxes, negates void filler like plastic air pillows, reduces shipping emissions, and improves the end-consumers overall experience. By right-sizing boxes, companies can minimize their costs and environmental impact associated with extraneous and unneeded corrugated while improving parcel logistics, fitting 66% more boxes on freight and delivery carriers. Leveraging the power of EFI Nozomi digital printing, global warming potential (GWP) is reduced by approximately 50% compared to analog printing technologies with the elimination of printing plates, ink waste, and overproduction.

Tintoria Finissaggio 2000: Innovative textile company invests in the latest Mahlo development

Tintoria Finissaggio 2000 is one of the most important Italian companies in the textile finishing sector. Founded in 1973 in Masserano in the textile district of Biella, the company has developed into a highly valued contact point for Italian and international textile manufacturers. In its early days, Tintoria Finissagio 2000 initially concentrated on the processing of knits for sportswear, but then specialised in the processing, finishing and dyeing of fine fibres, particularly wool and cashmere. Today it offers the complete range of dyeing of all types of fibres, finishing, digital printing, lamination and membrane lining. These processes are used to give fabrics certain properties, such as colour, pattern, softness, shine or waterproofness.

With over 100 employees, Tintoria Finissaggio’s company philosophy is based on three cornerstones: sustainable innovation, high human capital and first-class customer service. The latter is guaranteed above all by customised production and rapid response to new requirements. The company serves a wide range of customers in various industries, including fashion, home textiles, automotive and technical textiles.

At Tintoria Finissaggio 2000, customers benefit from the fact that all processes are handled under one roof, from design support to the finishing of fabrics, combining decades of experience with the new possibilities of lamination and digital printing. The dyeing plant in Masserano is a state-of-the-art facility that fulfils the strictest environmental standards – to name just one example. In general, Tintoria Finissaggio 2000 continuously invests in state-of-the-art technologies and production facilities in order to achieve high-quality results while ensuring sustainable production processes.

The upgrading of new equipment is therefore another part of the company strategy. Tintoria Finissagio 2000 also focused on innovation when equipping a new stenter frame. The company opted for the latest development from German machine manufacturer Mahlo GmbH + Co. KG: the Orthopac RXVMC-20 automatic straightening system. The new straightening concept is specially designed for processing textiles with high distortion dynamics, i.e. textiles with highly variable distortion.  The automatic straightening system can eliminate these distortions in textile webs even faster and more precisely than any other system on the market. “We have paid particular attention to the straightening mechanism and its interaction with the probe system’s analysis electronics,” explains Mahlo Sales Manager Thomas Höpfl. Two individually controlled and driven straightening modules with a total of three bow and four skew rollers ensure that bow and skew distortions are corrected in small steps. The control concept is also new. A scanner group at the infeed of the straightener detects distortions even before they reach the correction rollers. This means that the rollers are brought directly into position and the fabric is corrected from the very first centimetre. A scanner group at the outfeed also recognises any residual distortion, which is then corrected on the second straightening module.

Just a few months after commissioning, it is clear that the decision in favour of the new Mahlo concept was the right one. The owners Dino Masso and Marco Bardelle emphasise: “We had high hopes for the new Orthopac RXVMC-20 straightening system from Mahlo and our expectations have been exceeded by far. The results have fully convinced us. Mahlo also offers outstanding customer service and provided us with excellent support and training during the first few weeks of using the new technology.”

Emtec electronic advances textile haptic evaluation with enhanced TSA device at hightex 2024

The Germany-based device manufacturer Emtec Electronic will present its latest innovation in objective haptic measurement for textiles and nonwovens at HIGHTEX 2024, which will be held concurrently with the ITM exhibition from June 4-8 in Istanbul, Turkey

.The emtec TSA Tactile Sensation Analyzer represents a significant advancement in haptic testing technology. Based on a measuring principle that simulates the human fingertips, the portable lab device evaluates the hand-feel of fabrics with unprecedented accuracy and efficiency, measuring softness, smoothness, and stretch and recovery parameters within two minutes. Comparisons to results with traditional hand-panel testing methods using “touch experts” reveal a correlation of up to 100%. The TSA’s capabilities have been further enhanced with additional features, including:

  • Surface Thermal Conductivity and Thermal Insulation Measurement: The TSA reliably measures a product’s thermal properties, delivering objective data on how warm or cool a material feels to the touch.
  • Improved Design for Measuring Springback Behavior: The updated TSA utilizes an improved method for measuring springback behavior, accurately capturing a fabric’s ability to return to its original shape after deformation. This allows manufacturers to evaluate the elasticity and resilience of textiles, ensuring they meet specific performance standards.
  • Integrated High-Resolution Camera: A built-in camera captures detailed images of fabric structure, weave, and other visual embellishments, facilitating optical analysis.
  • Cloud-Based Virtual Haptic Library: Developed in collaboration with Black Swan Textiles, the Virtual Haptic Library is an online database that digitizes and categorizes TSA sample data, enabling seamless collaboration and quality control regardless of location.

The redesigned TSA helps answer the question: What makes one product more desirable than another? Is it softness, elasticity, cushioning, or a specific blend of these attributes? “With the improvements to the established TSA, manufacturers have even more tools at hand to define and enhance their product’s appeal,” explains Alexander Gruener, Global Business Development Manager at Emtec.

Visitors to HIGHTEX 2024 are invited to stop by the emtec booth No. 107 in Hall 1 and speak with emtec Area Sales Manager Daniel Ohndorf and Cem Dipçin from Turkish partner company LABTEK to learn more about the updated TSA’s functionalities and application possibilities.
